In the morning of December 6, 2017, the Confucius Institute at the University of Arizona participated in UA’s Finals Week activity held on the UA Mall lawn in front of the Old Main.
CIUA presented Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting and Chinese martial arts, and promoted the upcoming CIUA Chinese New Year Festival Gala and its 2018 courses at the event.
At the desk where Chinese writing brushes, rice paper, ink, broad knife, sword and white rabbit candies were displayed, CIUA Chinese language teacher Ms Yuhong Sun taught some American students to write Chinese characters with Chinese writing brush and ink on rice paper.
CIUA Chinese Arts teacher Miss Congcong Tan used several seemingly simple brushes to draw a cute lively giant panda and the American students watching her draw were all amazed. They followed her to draw pandas by themselves and took their finished paintings as souvenirs.
Some other American students learned basic movements and skills of Chinese knife play and sword play from CIUA Chinese Martial Arts instructor Xintuo Zhang.
CIUA’s new flyer featuring a pair of embroidered insoles with the caption: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and your journey to China begins with CIUA” also drew the attention of many American students.
