The Topic on “Health and Tai-chi” from CIUA Appeared on National Chinese Language Conference

4月6日,由中国孔子学院总部/国家汉办与美国大学理事会、亚洲协会联合 主办的第十届全美中文大会在美国德克萨斯州第一大城市休斯顿召开。本次会 议为期3天,包括6场会前讨论会、4场主题全会和93场分会。

On April 6th, the 10th National Chinese Language Conference in the U.S., co-organized by the Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban, the College Board and the Asia Society, convened in Houston, the largest city in Texas. The conference lasted 3 days, which included 6 pre-conferences, 4 plenary sessions with assigned topics and 93 branch meetings.

亚利桑那大学孔子学院两名武术教师应大会主办者的邀请为本次会议提供
了两次太极拳体验课。每次太极拳课有40余人参加,其中包括许多美国本土的 与会代表。课堂上学员们学习氛围浓厚,两名武术教师以杨氏八式太极拳作为 教学内容,一正一反进行示范;伴随着悠扬典雅的古筝曲,学员们模仿着老师 的动作,神情专注,动作和谐统一,沉醉其中。课程结束后,许多学员向两位 武术老师请教学习太极的方法并表示今后要坚持练习太极拳。

Two martial arts instructors from Confucius Institute at the University of Arizona (CIUA) were invited to provide two Tai Chi lessons. More than 40 people attended each lesson, including a number of people from the U.S. During the class, the people taking the class were focused on and enjoyed what the instructors were presenting, Yang style Tai-chi. With harmonious Guzheng music in the background, the two instructors demonstrated while everyone followed along. After the class, several people approached the instructors to ask about how they could begin to practice Tai-chi or continue practicing in the future.

4月7日,“中国传统文化与健康——太极拳在孔院”的主题分会由美国亚利 桑那大学孔子学院外方院长陈昭教授主持,会议发言嘉宾有美国伊利诺伊大学 运动机能与社区健康系朱为模教授和美国图森市资深太极拳老师Edna Silva女 士。

On April 7th, a seminar titled "Chinese traditional culture and health—Tai-chi in the Confucius Institute" stated, which Prof. Chen, Zhao presided over. She is the foreign dean of Confucius Institute at the University of Arizona, and there were two guest speakers Prof. Zhu Wei-mo, who is from American Kinesiology and Community Health Department of   University of Illinois and Ms. Silva Edna, who is an experienced Tai-chi instructor in Tucson.

陈昭教授首先介 绍了中国哲学与健康之间的关系包括中国传统哲学思想对太极、中医和养生方 法的产生和发展的影响;指出太极拳是一种强调身心合一的运动,在全球疾病 预防和健康促进方面有重要的地位。

Prof. Chen, Zhao introduced the connection between Chinese philosophy and health, and how Chinese philosophy has affected Tai-chi, Chinese Medicine, and TCM regimen. Prof. Chen emphasized that Tai-chi could play an important role in disease prevention and global health promotion, as it is an exercise that is focused on the harmony between body and mind.


朱为模教授风趣幽默的从运动与健康之间关系的研究谈到了太极拳,介绍 了太极拳对健康的有利影响的实证研究,并为太极拳与健康方面的研究提出了 看法。

Prof. Zhu, Wei-mo humorously spoke about Tai-chi and the relationship between health and exercise. She shared her research on how Tai-chi can improve health and proposed suggestions on further research on Tai-chi and health.

Edna Silva女士讲述了自己二十余年学习与传授太极拳的经历,结合自身的 医疗工作经验,总结了太极拳如何最大限度地改善一个人的健康状况。

Ms. Edna Silva shared her experience on learning and teaching Tai-chi in the last twenty years. Based on her medical practice, she explained how Tai-chi could maximize one’s health.

陈昭教授在研讨会最后做了总结性的发言,以“孔子学院——重要的健康与 养生教育平台“为主题,全面介绍了“健康与太极”在亚利桑那大学孔子学院的开 展现状和展望。

At the end of the seminar, Prof. Chen concluded with a presentation titled “Confucius Institute----the crucial platform for education on health and regimen”, in which she spoke about the prospect of teaching cultural activities related to “Health and Tai-chi”.


代表们对研讨会的内容表现出浓厚的兴趣,现场提问环节气氛活跃,演讲 嘉宾们的回答引起了听众们的热烈反响,会场内响起了阵阵掌声。由于讨论会 时间有限,许多代表意犹未尽,会后围着嘉宾们纷纷提问交流,久久不愿离 场。

The attendees were completely absorbed with the seminar. They actively interacted with the guest speakers with enthusiasm. When the seminar was finished, they were reluctant to leave and stayed to talk with the guest speakers.

生动的太极课和高水平的有关中国传统文化和太极的专业研讨拓展了与会者的视角,为在孔院开展和推动中国太极等健康传统文化的教学和活动起到了 积极和可贵的引领作用,成为这次全美中文大会的亮点。通过亚大孔院传播太 极和中国健康文化的实例,大会有效地展示了孔子学院总部/国家汉办对促进全 球健康的努力和贡献。

The vivid Tai-chi course and high-level of discussion about traditional Chinese culture broadened the attendees’ perspective, which was the highlight of this annual NCLC. The conference also helped promote the teaching program and activities like Tai-chi instructing. What CIUA did to spread Tai-chi and the traditional culture of Chinese health was demonstrated through the effort and contribution from the Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban.
