About Us

In December 2011, University of Arizona President Eugene Sander appointed Professors Zhao Chen and John Olsen the Co-Directors of the Confucius Institute at the University of Arizona (CIUA).

Welcome Message from the CIUA Co-Directors:

CIUA is a committed collaboration between the University of Arizona and the Hanban in China. By the end of 2011, there were 358 Confucius Institutes worldwide. CIUA is very proud to be one of a small number of Confucius Institutes situated in a top-ranked US research university, an extremely supportive community and in stunning natural surroundings.

Established in May 2008, CIUA is now in the transition to a fresh development phase with an enhanced mission and consolidated goals. CIUA aims to become one of the fifty Model Confucius Institutes around the world. CIUA will accomplish this goal by presenting solid Chinese language and culture programs and a unique health and wellness focus featuring innovative integration of traditional Chinese medicine, martial arts, culture, performance art, ancient history, humanity, education and language. The ultimate objective of CIUA is to promote multiculturalism and to advance friendly, productive relationships between the United States and China.

CIUA’s future is based on a foundation of three strong, closely-connected, and synergistic realms:

  1. Language instruction and teacher training
  2. Health promotion and wellness of the mind and body with a focus on traditional Chinese medicine and martial arts
  3. Chinese music and performance arts appreciation and teaching
